In 2008 the Maine Animal License Plate Team (MALT), comprised of the Maine's Animal Welfare Program, Planet Dog, Happy Tails, the Animal Refuge League, and the Animal Welfare Society, joined forces to initiate an ADOPT specialty license plate for Maine. Many other Maine animal advocacy organizations, including Maine Animal Coalition. supported MALT's efforts. In October 2008 MALT reached its initial goal of pre-selling 2,000 adopt plates in order for the initiative to become an official bill to be heard before the Legislature. LD 178 "An Act to Create the Support Animal Welfare Registration Plate" was introduced in the Maine Legislature. The bill became law on May 5, 2009. Purchase a ADOPT speciality license plate and $10 goes to support cruelty investigations by state human agents and to the Help Fix Me Program, which provides low cost spaying and neutering for cats and dogs of individuals with low income.
